Rockwall Vet says small dog owners all over the world love and cherish their pets, but has your small dog become the terror of the seven seas? They may be small, but they can certainly cause a big headache if they develop small dog syndrome.
Pups with small dog syndrome can bark a lot, very loudly, be extremely protective/possessive of you, and be much too aggressive towards others.
Because of their size, a small dog can cause trouble and get away with it much more easily than a large dog can. For one they aren’t nearly as loud when they bark, so they can get away with barking for longer, or they can be allowed to continue to bark because it can be ignored.
Not only does the size help them out, but so does their cuteness. Many owners will baby their pride and joy which will only encourage the behavior. When a small dog barks and is acting aggressive towards a visitor, many owners will pick them up and try to quiet them down by petting them and talking to them. To the dog this is like telling them “good job”.
Their cuteness and cuddliness makes it understandable why many owners let them act out of control. It’s easy to let them continue to bark like crazy when someone enters your house.
Does your dog not let anyone else come close to you? It may seem like they are protecting you, but in actuality it is their way of claiming you as theirs. This is quite the opposite of how things are supposed to be, as they should be your pet, and not the other way around.
Why do they act this way? Is it because of their size? A dog acts like this because it is allowed to act like that. If it was trained not to and not allowed to continue the bad behavior it would no longer be acting like a tiny terror.
Small dog syndrome is not permanent unless you continue to let them get away with it. With consistent training and discipline your dog will learn it can’t act that way, and become a happier and better behaved companion.
